Rubber Factory
Learn the ways of rubber
Since ancient times, Sri Lanka has been widely known for its natural resources, and this includes its rubber trees. The commodity is in high demand and has been an essential product called on by various industries throughout history. Watch the process from collecting the fresh sap right up to the end product which is the export-quality pure rubber.
History of Rubber in Sri Lanka
In 1876, 1,919 rubber seedlings were planted at the Henarathgoda Botanical Gardens in Gampaha, marking the beginning of rubber production in Sri Lanka. On Sir Joseph Hooker's advice, the Colonial Office despatched these rubber seedlings from Kew Gardens to Ceylon in 38 crates. The seedlings were produced from seeds Sir Henry Wickham acquired earlier that year in Brazil.
